Perennials Image Gallery

Every single yard, whether residential or commercial, can benefit from the proper placement of perennials. Perennials can be defined as flowers and blooms that continue to come back, year after year. They can be used in a variety of situations to add color, fragrance, and beauty to your home or office exterior.

Perennials in the Chicagoland Climate

In the Chicago area, perennials will typically bloom from early spring to late fall, depending on the variety. Some bloom only for a few weeks in the early spring, and others may bloom for several continuous weeks in the summer. Most will lie dormant through the winter, though, which means they will appear dead. In fact, the foliage itself does die, but the root continues to thrive – even when the ground freezes. When properly maintained, these plants will come back to life after a winter nap once the roots can start taking in water and nutrients. They will provide color, fragrance, and appeal season after season.

Popular Perennials

Some of the most popular perennials in this climate come in a variety of colors and styles that can ensure there’s something in bloom all spring, summer, and fall.

  • Coneflowers come in many colors and sizes, ranging from 16 inches to as high as four feet. This makes the coneflower a perfect accent piece when placed near shrubs or in corners of flowerbeds.
  • Butterfly weed isn’t a weed at all. In fact, it’s a flowering plant that’s sometimes called milkweed, and it’s easy to grow. If you want to see butterflies and hummingbirds in your yard, this is the perennial for you.
  • Lenten rose gets its name from the fact that it can bloom in early spring, right around the Lent season. You can find it in many colors, including purple, white, green, red, and pink. The plants grow to about a foot high and a little more than a foot across.
  • Geraniums are popular all over the Midwest since their blooms can last for weeks, if not months. The hardy varieties will start blooming in June, and they’ll deepen in color up until mid-fall.
  • Alliums are members of the onion family, and they produce colorful pom-pom shaped blooms that look gorgeous beside a dark green background, such as an evergreen shrub. These are best planted in partial shade, too.
